numerous e-mails from Jason Wyatt to Alan Salls 01/2003 and 02/2003. 1 NOTE Joseph is listed in the 1860 US Census as living in Mount Vernon, Jeff 2 CONC erson County, Il. This would be roll M653-187, page 794 of the census 2 CONC . There is no information in the census about him other than he was 2 2 CONC 4 years old at the time and he stated he was born in NY. 2 CONT 2 CONT Gina Saunders found records indicating a Joseph W. Salls enlisted in t 2 CONC he Civil War and listed his residence as Mount Vernon, Il., Company B 2 CONC , 110th Illinois Infantry. It appears that he survived the war. Se 2 CONC e also http://users.rootsweb.com/~iljeffer/civilwar.htm and go to pag 2 CONC e 5 of the soldier list and you will find a reference to Joseph W. Sal 2 CONC ls. 2 CONT 2 CONT In January of 2003, Alan Salls was contacted by Jason Wyatt, an archeo 2 CONC logist with Weaver & Associates, LLC, in Memphis, TN, concerning som 2 CONC e stoneware bottles that had been uncovered during excavation being pe 2 CONC reformed by the City of Memphis (summer of 2002) as part of the constr 2 CONC uction of a new NBA Arena. About 600 intact stoneware bottles had bee 2 CONC n found, with about 200 having Salls impressed in them. The image abo 2 CONC ve is of one of the bottles that were found (click the image for a lar 2 CONC ger view). 2 CONT 2 CONT Further research by Jason Wyatt through old Memphis city directories f 2 CONC ound that a Joseph (Joe) W. Salls had been the proprietor of the Sall 2 CONC s and Co. Spruce Beer Brewery in Memphis in the late 1860's through 18 2 CONC 71, and of the Dominion Coffee House in 1872. The brewery and coffe 2 CONC e house may have been owned & operated by Joseph Whitman Salls. Resea 2 CONC rch is ongoing as to Joseph's family, etc. 2 CONT 2 CONT The 1880 US Census, Arkansas, lists a Joseph Salls, 40 years of age a 2 CONC t that time, living with wife Mary, and an older female Salls, age 80 2 CONC . The first name of the older female is illegible. Ancestry.com list 2 CONC s the older female as Liza J., but I have no idea how they came up wit 2 CONC h that name from the scribble on the image!
