2 CONT 3/15/2001 (Alan Salls):
2 CONT
2 CONT The initial source of information for this database of Salls Family Hi
2 CONC story has been the book, Salls Families of the United States and Canad
2 CONC a, by Carroll M. Salls, Ph.D. It was written in Arlington, Virginia
2 CONC , in 1973, and published by Gateway Press, Inc., in Baltimore, Marylan
2 CONC d. The book's Library of Congress Catalogue Card Number is 73-85163
2 CONC . This volume is long out of print, however copies are fairly easil
2 CONC y obtained from on-line out-of-print book dealers, usually for $25. t
2 CONC o $45.
2 CONT
2 CONT It is recognized that there are many errors and omissions in this sour
2 CONC ce, and thus in the on-line database at this time. Once the intial da
2 CONC ta transfer from the book to the electronic database is complete, we w
2 CONC ill attempt to update, correct, and add to the database with informati
2 CONC on provided by those who have viewed and used it. Please continue t
2 CONC o supply your feedback; it will be used in the very near future as soo
2 CONC n as the initial data transfer from the book is completed.
2 CONT
2 CONT Many thanks to Angela Salls for her recent efforts in adding to the da
2 CONC tabase from the information in Carroll's book. Without her help, thi
2 CONC s project may have taken years to complete! In less than a week, sh
2 CONC e has added over 100 new individuals to the database. At this rate, t
2 CONC he completion of the data transfer from Carroll's book to electronic f
2 CONC ormat is not far off by any means. :)
2 CONT
2 CONT 3/18/2001 (Angela Salls):
2 CONT
2 CONT There is an old map on file in the Museum in Stanbridge East, Quebec
2 CONC , Canada, it has the Title, Plan of the Frontier of Canada East from S
2 CONC t. Denis to Canaan, Surveyed in the year 1839 under the direction of C
2 CONC olonel the Honourable Charles Gore, Deputy Quarter Master General. Thi
2 CONC s map may have some information to pinpoint the location of property e
2 CONC ither owned or rented by Salls families in the area at that time.
2 CONT
2 CONT 4/3/2001 (Angela Salls):
2 CONT
2 CONT There is a map called Walling's Map of 1864. This map listed Daniel Sa
2 CONC lls; D. Salls; F. Salls; John Salls; I. Salls; & S. Salls on the roa
2 CONC d north out of the center of Clarenceville, Quebec, Canada. It also li
2 CONC sted H. Salls on the road south out of the center of Clarenceville, Qu

2 CONT Upgraded the GeneWeb application software to version 4.01. The Messag
2 CONC e Board is now functional, which was not the case with version 4.00, s
2 CONC o please feel free to leave a message when you visit the site. The li

2 CONC e link where you accessed these notes.
2 CONT
2 CONT 4/16/2001 (Angela Salls):
2 CONT
2 CONT The Salls family name is used interchangably with Searles & Sarles, a
2 CONC s indicated by numerous census records thoughout Canada & the New Engl
2 CONC and states dating back to the Mid-1700's (See individual people for mo
2 CONC re information on the content of the census records).
2 CONT
2 CONT 6/11/2001 (Angela Salls):

2 CONT At a 1967 reunion attended by Harris Salls (1897), friends & reletive
2 CONC s came from Swanton, Vermont; Cumberland, Rhode Island; Montpelier, Ve
2 CONC rmont; Greensboro, Vermont; Clarenceville, Quebec, Canada; South Bolto

2 CONC ; Mansonville, Quebec, Canada; and South Stukely, Quebec, Canada.
2 CONT
2 CONT 8/3/2001 (Angela Salls):
2 CONT
2 CONT After the death of Senator Charles Benjamin Howard in 1964 the Howarde
2 CONC ne Estate near the center of Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada was sold to th
2 CONC e city of Sherbrooke & maintained as a large & beautiful public park
2 CONC , famous especially for its extensive display of flowers during the su
2 CONC mmer months. The park includes two large granite buildings. One buildi
2 CONC ng was used in 1972 as an Industrial Museum. The other building is th
2 CONC e Mansion which was the former home of Senator Howard.
2 CONT
2 CONT 8/16/2001 (Angela Salls):
2 CONT
2 CONT The Walling's Map of 1864 lists a H. Salls farm about a mile south o
2 CONC f Iron Hill, Quebec, Canada. It could be for Henry, Hix or Hiram. Tw
2 CONC o cemeteries are also located there, one Anglican, the other a Union C
2 CONC emetery. (See note above dated 4/3/01 for more information on the Wall

2 CONT
2 CONT I have received three lengthy letters from Nancy Otis in Manchester, V
2 CONC T (5/20/2002, 7/20/2002, and 9/27/2002). The database has now been up
2 CONC dated with the majority of the information from these letters. Most o
2 CONC f what Nancy had were corrections and additions to Carroll Salls' boo
2 CONC k which were discovered soon after it's publishing, however some of th
2 CONC e material she sent was much more recent too. Many thanks to Nancy fo
2 CONC r providing this very valuable info! :)

1 NOTE Hiram's & Mary's story is a moving history. A history of building, mov

2 CONC other new home.
2 CONT
2 CONT Hiram & Mary built thier first house in Clarenceville, Quebec, Canada
2 CONC . It was completed on February 15, 1851, they lived there until May 1
2 CONC , 1854 when they rented the house for five months & went to live wit
2 CONC h her parents. On October 1, 1854 they moved back into thier home & li
2 CONC ved there until March 1, 1857 when they sold it to Mr. David Lewis. Th
2 CONC ey then bought a farm from Mr. Charles Nelson Beerwort (a brother of M
2 CONC ary's) just south of Clarenceville, Quebec, Canada & across the road f
2 CONC rom the Beerwort homestead. They built a brick house & lived in it unt
2 CONC il March 1867 when they sold the farm to Mary's Father, Mr. Henry Beer
2 CONC wort, & they moved to Stanstead, Quebec, Canada where they rented a ho
2 CONC use from Mr. Abram Salls for six months.
2 CONT
2 CONT On September 1, 1867 they moved to Burlington, Vermont & rented a hous
2 CONC e on Hyde Street from Mr. Otis Smith for nine months. During that tim
2 CONC e Hiram bought a lot on North Union Street from Mr. E.C. Loomis on Dec
2 CONC ember 1, 1867. Hiram built a brick house on that lot & they moved int
2 CONC o it on May 1, 1868 & lived there for nearly six years. This first Uni
2 CONC on Street house is pictured above. In 1873 a new street named Loomi
2 CONC s Street was opened in Burlington, Vermont. Hiram built another bric
2 CONC k house on the corner of North Union & Loomis Streets. They moved int
2 CONC o that house on February 10, 1874 & rented the other brick house on No
2 CONC rth Union Street. They lived in the corner house until April 1, 1876 w
2 CONC hen they sold it to Governor U.A. Woodbury who bought it for a homeste
2 CONC ad. They moved back to the North Union Street house while Hiram was bu
2 CONC ilding a new house on Loomis Street which was finished September 1, 18
2 CONC 76. They lived in the Loomis Street house until March 1, 1878 when the
2 CONC y sold it to Mr. J.J. Bigelow. They moved into a stone house owned b
2 CONC y Mr. Noah Allen on the corner of Winooski Avenue & Grant Steet fo
2 CONC r a few months. In August 1878 they bought a small farm at 29 North Av
2 CONC enue from Mr. Eugene Goodrich & lived there until July 25, 1882 when t
2 CONC hey sold that farm to Mr. Albert Jones.
2 CONT
2 CONT Hiram & Mary then moved to Frelighsburg, Quebec, Canada & bought a 16
2 CONC 0 acre farm from Mr. Henry Harrison Mitchell on Joy Hill about a mil
2 CONC e southeast of the Village & about half way to Abbots Corners. The fam
2 CONC ily (including 20 year old Horace R. Salls) lived there until Decembe
2 CONC r 1, 1885 when they sold the 160 acre farm to Mr. William A. Smith. Th
2 CONC e farm was described as comprising parts of lots 5 & 6 in 1882. Prio
2 CONC r to 1885 the description was changed to lots 214 & 215 in the paris
2 CONC h of St. Armand East. The purchase of the farm by Hiram & Mary is regi
2 CONC stered in Bedford, Quebec, Canada in St. Armand East Book 53, page 20

2 CONC bdivided & sold several times & some parcels have been combined to for
2 CONC m larger tracts suitable for operation of th commercial apple orchard
2 CONC s that blanket the hills to the south & east of Frelighsburg, Quebec
2 CONC , Canada. The occupants of lots 214 & 215 in 1972 near the intersectio

2 CONC h there is a wonderful view of the mountains & apple orchards. It is u
2 CONC nderstandable that Horace R. Salls had fond memories of his fater's Jo
2 CONC y Hill Farm.
2 CONT
2 CONT They moved back to Burlington, Vermont where Hiram bought a lot on Mai
2 CONC n Street from Mr. John Spencer. While building a double brick house th
2 CONC ey rented a house on Cherry Street for two months from Mrs. Mead. Th
2 CONC e double brick house was completed on September 1, 1886 & they moved i
2 CONC nto the east half & rent the west half to Dr. Henry Tinckham. They liv
2 CONC ed there until March 1, 1890, then rented the east half to Mr. Georg
2 CONC e Morse for a year. The Main Street house was sold February 15, 1892 t
2 CONC o Sylvester G. Salls. They moved to the Hoyt Edson Salls block on Chur
2 CONC ch Street & lived there for six months They then moved to the Finnega
2 CONC n Block on Grant Street for a year. Hiram bought a lot at the southeas
2 CONC t corner of Grant & Clark Streets from Mr. William Shaw, & built a ten
2 CONC ement block which was finished in September 1891. They moved into th
2 CONC e west end of the block & lived there until March 23, 1897 when they r
2 CONC ented the block & moved to Shelburne Street, renting a house for fiv
2 CONC e months from Mr. H.E. Adams. On December 19, 1893 Hiram's son, Horac
2 CONC e R. Salls & wife Annette, were living in the east end of the tenemen
2 CONC t block when Horace's son, Carroll M. Salls was born.
2 CONT
2 CONT Hiram bought a lot at 139 Shelburne Street from Mr. D.G. Bond, buil
2 CONC t a house & moved into it on September 1, 1897. They sold that hous
2 CONC e & the tenement block at the corner of Grant & Clark Streets to Sylve
